Remember our parents were able to keep their skin intact, with no skin cancers along the way. Actually, I have to go back to my maternal Grandmother to use the cancer-free label.

Mom had skin cancer develop on her upper chest while in her late 80’s. It was located at the point on her chest where the sun would hit when wearing a buttoned shirt. My parents were country people, and Dad loved getting out and driving there in their farm country.

They loved a good drive after retirement, and spent many afternoons, driving. The sun through the windshield finally did its deal. The one incident was all she had. Her treatment was a success.

I hope to have as few issues as she had, throughout my life. However, I have already had so many removed. My kids have more than me! We have to protect our grandkids!

Decoding UPF Numbers

Finally, this part got easier!

First off, UPF is the rating for clothing. SPF is the rating for sunscreen.

UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) is a rating system.

It is used to indicate the effectiveness of clothing in protecting against ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun.

The higher the UPF rating, the greater the level of UV protection.

Here is a general guide to UPF ratings:

UPF RatingUV Protection
15-24Good
25-39Very Good
40-50+Excellent
50 is as high as you can get. You will still get 2% UV Rays.

Please note that clothing with a UPF rating of 50+ is considered to provide excellent protection against UV radiation.

It’s important to choose clothing with a UPF rating that suits your needs, especially if you spend a lot of time outdoors.

Color Can Be Important

Keep in mind that UPF ratings may vary depending on the fabric and color of the clothing.

Darker colors and tightly woven fabrics generally provide better UV protection.

Additionally, clothing with a UPF label has been tested and certified for its UV protection properties.

  • Ever heard of UPF? It’s like a superhero rating for fabrics.

The guarantee that a UPF-rated item of clothing often comes with a price tag. When you are shopping in your closet you do not get this guarantee.

But what is that guarantee worth to you if you don’t know how to correctly use the garment? You may get your money back, but you still have a sunburn that can’t be undone. It is yours for life!
